Why "AI-Proficient" on Your Marketing Resume Means Nothing in 2025

July 2026 · 4 min read

In 2023, "Proficient in Microsoft Office" was the most meaningless line on any resume.

Everyone wrote it. Nobody checked it. Hiring managers skimmed past it without a second thought.

In 2025, "AI-proficient" has become the new Microsoft Office line.

The words are different. The problem is identical.

The resume line nobody believes

Search any marketing job description right now. AI proficiency appears in 90% of them as a requirement. Search any marketing resume. AI proficiency appears in 90% of them as a claimed skill.

The result: a market flooded with identical claims that nobody can verify and nobody trusts.

This is not a dishonesty problem. Most marketers who write AI-proficient genuinely use AI tools in their work. The problem is that the phrase has become so generic — so divorced from any specific meaning — that it communicates nothing.

A hiring manager reading "AI-proficient" on a resume cannot tell whether the candidate uses AI occasionally for grammar checks or runs sophisticated AI-driven growth experiments. The phrase covers both equally. It proves neither.

Why this hurts the people who are actually good

The marketers who are genuinely skilled with AI — who use it thoughtfully, who challenge its recommendations, who integrate it seriously into their strategy — are getting no credit for it.

Because on paper they look identical to someone who opened ChatGPT twice.

Same three words: AI-proficient. Completely different capabilities. Zero differentiation.

This is the bluffing economy. Everyone bluffs. The honest professional loses because there is no mechanism to separate genuine capability from claimed capability.

What to write instead

The answer is not a better adjective. "Advanced AI user" or "AI-first marketer" has the same problem — it is still a claim without evidence.

The answer is evidence itself.

Instead of claiming AI proficiency — show a specific moment where AI was wrong and you caught it. Show where your recommendation differed from AI's output. Show where your experience added something AI could not produce.

These moments are worth more than any resume line.
