Every marketer is using AI now.
ChatGPT for content briefs. Claude for research. Midjourney for creative concepts. AI tools have become as common in marketing workflows as spreadsheets.
But here's the problem nobody talks about: using AI and being able to prove you use it well are two completely different things.
When a hiring manager asks "how do you use AI in your work?" — most marketers say something like: "I use ChatGPT for ideation and content drafts." That answer tells the hiring manager almost nothing. It describes a tool, not a skill.
An AI portfolio changes that. Here's how to build one.
What an AI portfolio actually is
An AI portfolio is not a collection of AI-generated content. Anyone can generate content with AI. That's not a skill — that's access.
A real AI portfolio documents your thinking process — specifically the moments where your judgement, experience, and insight shaped, challenged, or improved what AI produced.
It answers questions a resume never can:
Where did you push back on AI's recommendation? Where did your experience change the output? Where did you catch something AI missed?
Those moments are where the real skill lives. An AI portfolio makes them visible.
The three things every AI portfolio needs
A real problem, not a hypothetical. The strongest AI portfolios are built around actual business challenges — a campaign you ran, a market you analysed, a growth problem you solved. Not a made-up exercise. Hiring managers can tell the difference between someone who worked through a real problem with AI and someone who completed a generic tutorial. Specificity is the signal.
Your decision trail, not just the output. Document what AI suggested — and what you did differently. Did you accept the recommendation? Challenge it? Modify it based on data AI didn't have access to? The gap between what AI produced and what you decided is where your expertise lives. That gap is what's worth showing.
A format hiring managers can actually read. A Google Doc with your AI prompts is not a portfolio. Neither is a screenshot of a ChatGPT conversation. Your AI portfolio needs to be scannable in under two minutes, shareable with a link, and specific enough that a hiring manager can immediately see how you think.
The biggest mistake marketers make
They document the output instead of the thinking.
Showing a campaign brief that AI helped write tells a hiring manager what you produced. It doesn't tell them how you got there, where you challenged the process, or what you contributed that AI couldn't.
The output is the least interesting part. The thinking is everything.
How to start building your AI portfolio today
Step 1 — Pick one real project you are currently working on. Don't start with something theoretical. Use an actual campaign, growth challenge, or strategic problem from your current role. Real context produces better thinking and more credible documentation.
Step 2 — Work through it with AI deliberately. Don't just prompt AI and accept the output. Engage with it as a thinking partner. Ask it for a recommendation, then challenge the recommendation. Ask it to analyse data, then identify what it missed. Document every point where you disagreed, added context, or made a different call.
Step 3 — Capture the moments that matter. The most valuable entries in your AI portfolio are the specific moments where AI recommended X and you chose Y with your reasoning, AI made an assumption your experience told you was wrong, or you identified a data point or insight AI didn't surface. These are the moments that separate professionals who use AI from professionals who think with AI.
Step 4 — Make it shareable. Your AI portfolio needs a link. Not an attachment. Not a PDF that lives on your hard drive. A URL you can put in your email signature, your LinkedIn profile, and your resume.
